Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap plans, are lettered A through N, and each one covers a different combination of gaps left by Original Medicare. Because these plans are standardized by the federal government, a Plan G from one insurance company covers exactly the same benefits as a Plan G from another company. The only difference between carriers is the premium and the level of customer service.

Which Medigap Plan Is Right for You?
With ten standardized plans to choose from, narrowing down the right one comes down to your priorities: predictable costs versus lower premiums. Here is how the most popular plans compare.
Plan G — Best for New Enrollees
Plan G is the most popular choice for people newly eligible for Medicare. It covers everything except the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), giving you near-complete predictability with a lower premium than Plan F. Because Plan F is no longer available to new enrollees, Plan G has become the gold standard for comprehensive coverage.
Plan N — Best for Lower Premiums
Plan N offers slightly less coverage than Plan G in exchange for a noticeably lower premium. With this plan, you handle small copays yourself up to $20 for some doctor visits and up to $50 for ER visits that don’t result in admission, plus any Part B excess charges. For healthy individuals who don’t visit the doctor frequently, choosing Plan N can mean significant savings over time.
Plan F — Most Comprehensive (Limited Availability)
Plan F covers every gap in Original Medicare, including the Part B deductible. However, only those who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, can purchase it. As a result, Plan F is becoming less common, and existing enrollees often find that switching to Plan G even after paying the small Part B deductible results in lower overall annual costs.
High-Deductible Plan G — Best for Low Premiums with Catastrophic Protection
High-Deductible Plan G works just like standard Plan G, but you must first meet an annual deductible (which adjusts each year) before the plan begins paying. In exchange, you get a significantly lower monthly premium. This option appeals to beneficiaries who want protection against catastrophic costs but are comfortable paying more out-of-pocket for routine care.
Important: A Plan G Is a Plan G, Regardless of Carrier
The federal government standardizes Medigap plans, so the benefits of a Plan G from one insurance company are identical to the benefits of a Plan G from any other company. Therefore, the only differences between carriers are:
- Monthly premium — rates vary significantly between carriers for the exact same coverage
- Rate increase history — some carriers have a track record of more stable rates over time
- Financial strength rating — A.M. Best ratings indicate the carrier’s long-term financial stability
- Customer service quality — claims processing speed and support availability
Since the coverage is the same, comparing carriers comes down to finding the lowest premium from a financially strong company with a good service record. An independent broker can run exactly this kind of comparison for you at no cost.
📌 New York Advantage: New York is one of only a few states offering year-round guaranteed issue rights for Medicare Supplement plans. In most states, once your initial 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period ends, insurance companies can use medical underwriting to deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health history. New York residents, however, can apply for or switch Medigap plans at any time, and carriers must accept them regardless of pre-existing conditions. As a result, this gives New York residents significant long-term flexibility that beneficiaries in most other states do not have.
