What is the Initial Enrollment Period? Your IEP is a 7-month window centered around your 65th birthday during which you can first enroll in Medicare. Missing this window can result in permanent late enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage. Enter your birthday below to find your exact dates.

If you have been on SSDI for 24+ months you are already eligible for Medicare regardless of age.

When Does Your Coverage Start?

Important IEP Tips

  • Enroll in Month 1, 2, or 3 — coverage starts the first day of your birthday month or sooner
  • Enroll in your birthday month — coverage starts the first of the following month
  • Enroll in Month 5, 6, or 7 — coverage is delayed by 1–3 months
  • Still working at 65? If you have employer coverage, you may be able to delay Medicare without penalty — but rules vary. Call us before making this decision.
  • Missing your IEP results in a permanent 10% Part B penalty for every 12-month period you were eligible but not enrolled
  • Part D penalty: 1% of the national base premium per month without creditable drug coverage
